Spanning more than 9,000sf, the challenge of this residential renovation/addition was to unify and simplify.  The original structure meandered; stylistically, structurally, and in plan. The new design approach focused on a single ‘modern-mission style,’ hacking away the disjointed components, then adding and strengthening the relationships that reinforced it.

Starting with the site, the design opens up to the 3+ acres of private, forested land in the backyard. New structure, canopy, hardscape, and landscape create a private oasis, made accessible from nearly every space in the house by massive new doors and windows. Unified by the all-new hand-troweled plaster façade and shake roof, the airy, open feel is representative of the owners’ love of Californian-Coastal Design.

Working closely with interior design firm Kelly Johnson Design, the entertaining areas within the house are luxurious experiences, bathed in sunlight, serenely clad in natural woods and stones.  Credit also to the builder, Sitelines Inc, navigating the complexities inherent to the renovation process and expertly adapting the details to work with real world conditions.
